UPDATE: Diesel fuel spill impacting Fountain Creek

(WOODLAND PARK, Colo.) — The Teller County Sheriff's Office said Highway 24 at Colorado 67 in Woodland Park and Highway 24 at South West Street is now open.

Deputy Chief Dean O’Nale of the Northeast Teller County Fire Protection District told FOX21News.com that the driver of the gas tanker was going through the parking lot of a nearby gas station when the trailer went over a small retaining wall and tipped over.

According to O’Nale, about 2,100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled, some of which apparently got into Fountain Creek. Emergency crews on the scene are trying to contain the spill to a mile.

Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs have both been alerted of potential contamination, according to O’Nale. No injuries have been reported.

Northeast Teller County Fire Protection District said fire crews are working to contain the diesel fuel from an overturned gas tanker near Highway 24 and Colorado 67, to prevent any from getting into the water stream. Businesses nearby have also been evacuated due to the incident.

Hazmat teams will work to retrieve the remaining fuel from the truck. During that time, Highway 24 will be closed while Hazmat teams work.

Fire crews are on the scene of an overturned gas tanker near Highway 24 and Colorado 67 in Woodland Park in the morning hours of Tuesday, May 16.

According to Woodland Park Police Department, the driver misjudged a turn and rolled the truck. Woodland Park Police said it was off the roadways and there were no injuries.

Woodland Park Police said 2,100 gallons of gas has leaked from the tanker. Fire crews had called a hazmat team to assist.
