Lakeside man struck by semi truck, seriously injured while standing next to disabled car along I

A Lakeside man was seriously injured early Friday when he was struck by a big rig while standing next to a disabled car alongside Interstate 8 in Alpine, the California Highway Patrol said.

The car was also hit in the crash, which happened about 12:45 a.m. in eastbound lanes west of Tavern Road, CHP Officer Matthew Baranowski said.

The 26-year old man was standing on the driver's side of a 2002 Cadillac Eldorado on the right shoulder of the freeway.

The driver of a tractor-trailer hauling a water tanker allowed the vehicle to travel to the right and off the roadway, where it struck the Lakeside man and the car, Baranowski said.

The victim sustained major injuries and was taken to a San Diego hospital.

A second man who’d been standing outside of the disabled Cadillac and a woman seated inside it were not injured, Baranowski said.
