Tractor-trailer carrying gasoline rolls over in Providence
Rhode Island State Police say they don't yet know what caused a tanker carrying 11,000 gallons of gasoline to roll onto its side on Thurbers Avenue in Providence.
The crash happened shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday.
Lt. David Gormly told NBC 10 News that speed does not appear to have been a factor and there don't appear to have been any injuries.
According to the lieutenant, the driver appears to have been attempting to enter the on-ramp to Interstate 95 north when the truck rolled onto its side. The tank, he added, ruptured in the crash and began leaking.
Crews, Gormly added, were called in to pump gasoline from the damaged tanker, as well as to contain any possible environmental damage.
According to the Department of Environmental Management, foam has been deployed on the roadway and responders are working on a plan to contain the gasoline and other chemicals from impacting the river. the plan is to not move the truck until gasoline has been removed from the road and the catch basin.
So far no word on when the Thurbers/Allens Avenue on- and off-ramps will reopen.
