The unusual-looking semi-trailer is a result of the 4-year collaboration of the leading manufacturers from the automotive industry. Will this solution become popular on European roads?

The EU-Transformers project involved several well-known automotive industry manufacturers. The initiative was supported by the IRU organisation and many experts and scientists. The European Commission also put its 5 cents (more specifically: EUR 5M) in the project.

The purpose of EU-Transformers was to create and present an innovative energy-efficient truck and semi-trailer. The key to such a vehicle is the optimum load capacity, better fuel economy, and lower emissions. After 4 years of the collaboration between Schmitz Cargobull with such manufacturers as DAF, Volvo, Bosch, and Van Eck, the project creators have presented a modern and quite unusual semi-trailer. How is it different from other semi-trailers available on the market and what are its advantages?

What is particularly noticeable is primarily the sloping roof of the semi-trailer. Along with foldable diffusers on the rear door, it is supposed to provide proper aerodynamics. However, if necessary, the roof can be raised. Then the rear door will extend and the second layer of the tent will appear.

Aside from the aerodynamic shape, the semi-trailer is also distinguished by the electric engine that drives its axle and relieves the tractor. This engine recovers energy during braking and stores in the batteries installed under the chassis.

Both of these solutions allow for reducing CO2 emissions by 25 percent and the fuel combustion by 9 percent.

A solution allowing for reducing emissions and fuel consumption was already created in 2012 by another German manufacturer – Krone. In collaboration with MAN and Michelin, it designed the Profi Liner Ultra 2-Achs semi-trailer which, combined with an accordingly improved semi-trailer truck allows for saving up even to 15 percent of fuel. This also means reduction of CO2 emission per tonne-kilometre by 15 percent, compared to the standard semi-trailer truck.

In case of the Krone’s concept, the shape of the semi-trailer itself did not change but it features other solutions. The manufacturer discarded the third axle of the semi-trailer and used elements of optimised mass, i.e. ultra chassis. This allows for reduction of fuel consumption which, ultimately, also affects the operating costs.
